Key transport corridor for north-west Poland
PORR to build section of the major project Western Bypass of Szczecin
Vienna/Warschau, / Construction projects / Press Release
One of the largest road construction projects in Poland is currently under way: The Western Bypass of Szczecin (ZOS). PORR has been commissioned by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) to deliver one of the project’s three construction phases. PORR will complete the Kołbaskowo–Dołuje section, with a length of over 13 km, within 41 months; the contract value is around EUR 150m (PLN 631m).

Factbox
- Planning and construction of a new 13 km expressway with two lanes in each direction
- Two road junctions (Będargowo and Dołuje) and 18 engineering structures
- These include eight wildlife passages and the longest bridge on the route, measuring 284 m
Specifically, the contract covers the design and build of a new 13km-long expressway with two lanes in each direction. The scope of works includes the associated infrastructure: Two interchanges (Będargowo and Dołuje), 18 engineering structures – including eight wildlife crossings – and a road maintenance depot near the Siadło Górne junction.
Karl-Heinz Strauss, CEO of the PORR Group: “The S6 route is a major driver for the development of north-west Poland, while also improving road safety and traffic flow in the Szczecin metropolitan area. We look forward to working with the GDDKiA on this project and will deliver it with our usual high standards of quality and adherence to deadlines, while of course considering environmental compatibility”.
284m-long bridge
The Kołbaskowo–Dołuje section begins with a connection to Phase II of the Przecław–Warzymice bypass along the DK13, one of the region’s main connecting roads. Here the Western Bypass will be linked to the A6 motorway via a new road network.
The route crosses numerous roads and railway lines. For example, PORR is building a 284m-long bridge to cross the Szczecin–Stobno Szczecińskie–Lübeck railway line. This structure will be the longest on the entire section. The new route will then terminate at Wołczkowo.
Another step towards better connections for Pomerania
To date, PORR has already built over 600 km of roads for GDDKiA, making it one of Poland’s key infrastructure builders.
With the Western Bypass of Szczecin section, PORR is now delivering another major infrastructure project in northern Poland. It has already completed the 1.5km-long DK11 section between the Janiska roundabout and the Kołobrzeg East junction, which opened in 2024, as well as the 10km-long S6 section between Bożepole and Luzino, finished in 2022. PORR is currently also carrying out works on the Wałcz, Szwecja and Złocieniec bypasses.
The tunnel in Świnoujście, handed over by PORR in 2023, is an investment of critical importance not only for Pomerania, but the whole of Poland. The tunnel, which was excavated with a tunnel boring machine, runs under the Świna Strait, connecting the islands of Usedom and Wolin, and providing the first permanent link between them. Until then, traffic between the islands had relied exclusively on ferry services.
