Transport infrastructure is being made fit for the future

The centrepiece of this construction lot is the two road tunnels, each with 2.2 km-long tunnel tubes and nine cross-passages. Tunnelling began in November 2020 in temperatures well below freezing. The tunnels were constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NÖT). Work on the inner linings was then carried out. In some sections, construction was carried out using the cut-and-cover method.

In total, around 350,000 m³ of concrete was used on the construction lot, 2.5 million m³ of excavated material was moved and around 2.3 million m³ of fill material was installed. In the interests of sustainability, the excavated material was transported by lorry to a temporary storage site for further use in road construction.

Now that it has been completed, the S3 expressway is relieving pressure on the surrounding transport infrastructure and forms one of the three pillars of the Polish road network. It is also part of the pan-European Central European Transport Corridor (CETC), which will stretch from Malmö in Sweden to the Greek port city of Chania.

With this major project, PORR remains in the fast lane in its key home market of Poland and is making a significant contribution to improving the quality of life for residents in the region.

What ultimately counts in the construction business is successfully completed projects. PORR has many of these.
